Cambuslang man Duncan Weir has been sensationally omitted from the 34-man Scotland squad for this summer’s three-test tour.

Gregor Townsend has wasted no time in making his mark as the country’s new head coach ahead of games against Italy, Australia and Fiji.

He announced a team which has no place for four players who were involved in the Six Nations Championship victory over Italy - including the former Catkin High School pupil.

The coach, who watched Weir contribute 19 points to Edinburgh’s victory over his own Glasgow Warriors side last week, said that recent form had counted against the 25-year-old.

Former Cambuslang Rugby Club man Weir is generally seen as a conservative playmaker with instincts very different to Townsend’s attack-minded focus.

“I was really pleased for him,” said Townsend of Weir’s performance at Scotstoun.

“He’s maybe not had the best of periods over the past few weeks but that was much more like Duncy.

“He misses out, but it was a close decision.”
