Willie Harvey switched to a 3-5-2 for this game and although Glens did not win, he reckons this was the moment the season turned.

Glens led at half-time thanks to an own goal but were pulled back shortly after the interval. Fraser Team’s ninth goal in 10 games fired them back into the lead but Alan Flanagan headed a late equaliser.

Glens won only one of their first seven games but this game marked a turnaround.

Girvan went on to win the league but Glens comfortably beat them twice over the course of a season by a combined score of 6-1.

The Rutherglen men had really started to hit their stride by now with Stuart Hall, Del McNab and top scorer Jay McKay helping themselves to goals during an impressive performance in Ayrshire.

Glens went on to beat eventual runners-up Clydebank to move within 10 points of top spot and the fans started to dream.

A game Willie Harvey picks out as the devastating loss, Glens dominated only to lose to a sucker-punch goal late on.

Looking back, Harvey said:“We absolutely destroyed them that day and their goalkeeper really had the shutters up.

“That game and a draw with Irvine Meadow is the five points we needed to promotion.”

The loss was Glens first since November and put a major dent in their promotion hopes.

A game that lifted Glens to the top of the table and had the fans dreaming not just of promotion but a possible title.

Fraser Team, Jamie Hunter and Jamie Hamilton were the goalscorers as the Rutherglen men sat proudly at the summit.

Ultimately, results elsewhere and dropped points against Irvine Meadow and Cumbernauld ended their hopes.

But for a few days at least Glencairn looked like they could pull off what at one time seemed impossible.
