A promising young Cathkin dancer is getting ready for a big show this week.

It will include a performance of the classic ballet Rite of Spring, along with contemporary and jazz pieces.

The challenging choreography will be danced by pupils aged 12 to 18 and the young dancers are currently working with acclaimed Swedenbased choreographer Julian Moss, who is developing the piece.

The dancers will also be joined by youngsters from St Mary’s Music School in Edinburgh for some of the work.

Olivia’s proud mum Jenny is looking forward to seeing her daughter on one of Glasgow’s most famous stages. She said: “I’ll be going both nights. “Olivia started dancing when she was four and after a couple of years it was suggested she try classical ballet.

“She was at a Scottish Ballet junior associates programme and after that decided she wanted to be a ballet dancer, so she auditioned for the dance school.

“There were 22 places and over 400 applicants, so we were so pleased when she got in.”

Students receive free specialist tuition from dance professionals, but also take part in the mainstream curriculum of Knightswood Secondary School.

Jenny added: “Ballet is something that Olivia loves. It’s her main passion, so she loves it there.

“The first two years are heavily about ballet, so she is really enjoying it - she stays there during the week to focus on it.”

Olivia will be cheered on by Jenny, dad David and her brothers Luke, 15, and twins Max and Guy, who are 11.

The show will be tonight at 7.30pm, and tomorrow at 1.30pm and 7.30pm.
