Haughey horrorat EUnurse figures

Rutherglen Reformer - - Caring -

Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey has described a 96 per cent drop in nurse registrations since the Brexit vote from the EU as “absolutely staggering”.

Figures released by the Nursing and Midwifery Council showed only 46 nurses from the EU registered to work in the UK in April this year. That compares with 1,304 in July last year.

Ms Haughey, who is deputy convener of the Scottish Parliament’s health and sport committee and a registered mental health nurse, said: “These figures are absolutely staggering – and they follow warnings from doctors’ leaders about the dangers Brexit poses to the NHS.

“The NHS and the patients it serves rely on nurses from across Europe – and Tory policies are robbing our NHS of the staff that are its very lifeblood through their dangerous and xenophobic Brexit policies.

“The Tory plans for a hard Brexit were roundly rejected by voters across the country last week – and they must now change their reckless proposals and ensure our NHS begins to benefit from workers from across Europe once again after a year of Tory-inflicted damage.”
