Un­der-15 girls make club his­tory

Ruther­glen Girls reached the Scot­tish Cup quar­ter fi­nals for the first time in the club’s five-year his­tory.

The un­der-15 squad are the first team to reach the last eight through all age groups after a re­sound­ing 7-1 vic­tory over Sten­house­muir Girls.

Cara McLeish’s hat-trick, an Emma Kiely dou­ble and ef­forts from Lucy Mullen and Mor­gan Mar­shall se­cured a com­fort­able win in the end for the Ruther­glen side.

Club coach Brian O’Neill was de­lighted for his team. He said: “We had a sticky patch in the first 10 min­utes in the first half but we were ac­tu­ally a goal up at that time and I don’t know how.

“But after that we set­tled and got the ball down and played some nice foot­ball.

“In the mid­dle of the sec­ond half we started to take con­trol of the game and dom­i­nated it from then on in.

“It is a big day for us be­cause we have never been in the quar­ter­fi­nals of this com­pe­ti­tion at any age level.”
