Hard luck for Lewis

Burnside golfer Lewis Irvine was knocked out of the Scottish Boys Amateur Championship after narrowly losing out in the quarter finals.

The 17-year-old ran Australian Josh Greer close and both were tied as they finished the course at the 18th.

Greer, of Joondalup CC, edged Lewis out after two more holes at Scotscraig, Tayport, to take on Callum Bruce in the semi-final.

Lewis tied seventh after a 36-hole stroke play and easily made the cut for the match play which started on Sunday. He was looking to go one better after finishing runner-up at the same event last year.

A comfortable 5&4 victory against Gifford’s Connor Wilson meant a last 16 tie with Lewis Brown from Tobermory awaited. A hard fought 2&1 triumph took him into the quarters to play Aiden Smith, of Edzel GC, where he came from one down with three holes to play to win at the last.
