A project that will help reach older men and tackle iso­la­tion in Ruther­glen and Cambuslang has been handed a boost.

South La­nark­shire Se­niors To­gether group re­ceived a £117,181 grant from the Na­tional Lot­tery to de­velop their mo­bile men’s shed.

The project has al­ready proved a hit in Hamil­ton and will now be rolled out to Ruther­glen and Cambuslang, as well as East Kil­bride.

Se­niors To­gether has taken a lead role in sup­port­ing the de­vel­op­ment of the three ex­ist­ing men’s shed groups and has now se­cured fund­ing to de­velop the mo­bile fa­cil­ity over the next three years.

Over that pe­riod it is ex­pected that 2,250 older peo­ple will par­tic­i­pate and 60 vol­un­teers will as­sist.

He­len Big­gins, chair­woman of Se­niors To­gether, said: “We are ab­so­lutely de­lighted about this Na­tional Lot­tery award from the Big Lot­tery Fund and can’t wait to get started.

“I would like to thank all the men in South La­nark­shire who took part in sur­veys, fo­cus groups and ques­tion­naires which all helped us make this suc­cess­ful bid.”

Big Lot­tery Fund Scot­land chair­woman Mau­reen McGinn said: “I am de­lighted that South La­nark­shire Se­niors To­gether has been suc­cess­ful in se­cur­ing a Big Lot­tery Fund grant.”
