Kids all set to WOW

- Douglas Dickie

Pupils at a Castlemilk primary school are hoping to encourage others to walk to school.

Castleton Primary was the venue for the launch of the annual WOW campaign, which is run by Living Streets Scotland, the charity for every day walking.

More than 280 primary schools across the country will take part in the challenge.

WOW rewards children who walk to school at least once a week with a collectable badge each month, with 10 to collect.

Children arrive at school and log their journeys online. This allows the school to see which pupils have earned a badge and monitor walking rates across the year.

This year the theme is Walk the Americas, which celebrates the culture of both North and South America.

Walking to school helps kids stay fit and is a great way to learn road safety skills. The Castleton children were joined by Strider, Living Streets Scotland’s mascot.

Paul Hardie, nurture teacher at Castleton Primary School, said: “Castleton Primary is proud to once again be hosting the launch of the Walk to School programme.

“Our pupils have been using the interactive travel tracker for years now and they love having the opportunity to log their journeys each morning as they arrive at school in a fun, engaging and easy way.

“So many of our pupils choose to walk, scoot, or cycle that I find myself always being able to reward their active choices by giving out high numbers of the monthly badges.”

WOW schools see on average a 13 per cent increase in pupils walking to school.

Stuart Hay, director of Living Streets Scotland, added: “WOW is simple to run and pupils love to take part. Just a few minutes of a teacher’s day is all it takes to make a big difference.”
