Star shines at Somervell

Former Gers man was ‘a total gent’

- Douglas Dickie

Cambuslang Rangers is fast becoming to the place to be for senior footballers after another well known face turned up at Somervell Park on Saturday.

Former Rangers star Barrie McKay was in the crowd to watch the Lang’s epic 4-3 victory over Irvine Meadow.

The 22-year-old, who now plays down south with Nottingham Forest, was happy to chat to fans and pose for pictures with local youngsters.

Among those he met were players from Drumsagard FC’s 2011 team, who provided half-time entertainment when they took on their counterparts from Irvine Meadow in a friendly match.

He even sponsored one member of Rutherglen Burgh FC, who will soon do a sponsored sleep out to raise club funds and help those who have found themselves on the streets.

John Mills, one of the coaches at Drumsagard FC, said: “He was absolutely brilliant with the kids.”

Alex Black, who persuaded McKay to sponsor his 11-year-old son, Cooper, added: “He was a total gent and took the time to chat to all the kids.”

McKay was there to watch his brother, who plays for Irvine Meadow.

It is not the first time a star of Scottish football has made it along to Somervell this year.

In April, Aberdeen midfielder Kenny McLean headed straight from Hampden where he had helped the Dons reach the Scottish Cup final, to Somervell where the Lang were playing Forth Wanderers.

We will have pictures from Drumsagard 2011’s match with Irvine Meadow in next week’s Reformer.
