KERR GIVES BATTLE CRY

New chairman calls on public to back Premier Lang

- Murray Spooner

Cambuslang Rangers’ new chairman David Kerr has issued a rallying call to the public to back their club as they make a return to Junior football’s top flight.

The loyal Lang supporter was appointed successor to William Miller, who stepped down from the role after 16 years.

Kerr outlined his vision for the club he has followed ever since he was a youngster.

And along with building the fanbase in mind, the married dad-of-one also has hopes of turning Cambuslang Rangers into a community club.

He told the Reformer: “I have had a lot of people ask me to come on board and I feel the time is right for me to come in and move the club forward.

“I will have a hard act to follow in Mr Miller but I fully believe in my ability to bring this club back to where it belongs.

“I would like to see, first and foremost, bigger crowds. We have had a great amount of success in the last three years and it would be great to get the crowds I feel we deserve.

“It will take time, but I would like to see us become a community club with a full youth academy and 21s team. I would like to see more local guys in the team.

“It really is great seeing young local men like Kris Gebbie and Jordan Morton in our first team and doing well.”

Kerr takes over at the helm of a club very much on the up after manager Paul McColl led the team to three promotions in a row.

The Camby are now back in the big-time that is the West Regions’ Premiership for the first time in 16 years.

Fans will see some of the biggest names from the Junior game come to Somervell Park.

But Kerr is aware the club’s finances will need to be in order to compete with the big guns next season.

And he reckons his experience of working with Europe’s biggest football clubs as owner of DT Sports Travel will enable him to deliver fresh new ideas.

“I will sit down with our new committee in the coming week and work on a budget,” he continued.

“I think that we will be able to give a reasonable-sized budget and we hope to compete.

“To be honest, we are going in against some real top teams. I think our aim is to get up and consolidate and stay in the league, and then build on that.

“I like to think that I can bring fresh ideas to the club.

“In my day job I work with some of the biggest clubs in Europe and a lot of Premier League clubs.

“We will be launching several new fundraising initiatives as well as encouraging new businesses to work with us and we can help them in return.”

Cambuslang Rangers are now on the lookout for matchday volunteers, a physio and a kitman. For more information, contact the club via Facebook or Twitter.
