A 10-year-old Cambuslang girl being tipped as a future Scottish boxing champion is using some special Sly Stallone inspiration for success.

Ruby Samson has been watching re-runs of the classic boxing movie Rocky IV – which was released 21 years before she was even born.

The youngster, who began training with Durie’s Gym in Rutherglen two years ago, has watched the Rocky film countless times with her parents and it keeps her motivated to fight her way to the top.

And Ruby – a southpaw fighter just like Rocky – is going all the way to the top, according to her boxing coach.

Durie’s Gym has produced three female Scottish champs over the years and coach Archie Durie is certain the hugely talented West Coats Primary pupil is next.

He said: “As an experienced boxing coach and ex-pro boxer myself, it’s quite clear to me that Ruby Samson is going to be the next Vicky Glover and become Scottish champion.

“Ruby could definitely go all the way for club and country, just like Vicky did when she appeared for Scotland in the Commonwealth Games in Australia this year.

“I already see Ruby as being that good.

“Her balance, footwork, hand speed, and coordination are perfect.”

Ruby trains at Durie’s four nights a week after school and sometimes does extra sparring on Saturdays.

Her club has produced three Scottish women champions over the years in Cassidy Todd, Sinead Price-Greene, and Vicky Glover.

Vicky is a big inspiration to Ruby as she gave the youngster her trophy from a boxing bout last year.

Ruby has now appeared in three cub boxing bouts at shows over the past 18 months, including last month’s sold-out show in the King’s Park Hotel.

Mum Emma explained: “Ruby first started boxing around March 2017.

“She wanted to get involved in the sport because her big cousin Dominic was doing it. She kept asking us, ‘please can I go?’

“And when she did, she took to it like a natural.

“She loves the training environment and working to develop her skills. It brings out the best in her.

“The Rocky IV movie played a part in her love for boxing.

“She loves it, in fact we all do, and that helps inspire her too. We’ve watched it loads of times.”

The family – dad James, mum Emma, and Ruby’s younger sisters, Scarlett, seven, and Robyn, five – were on holiday in Florida

in June. and while they were there, Ruby was pleased as punch to have her picture taken with the Sylvester Stallone statue.

Coach Archie is sure Ruby has a bright future in the ring and said: “Ruby’s a real little character in the gym, with an answer for anything.

“She always got a smile, but in the ring she is a different person – serious and focused.

“She’ll be our gym’s next female Scottish champion, of this I’m sure.”
