Check your eyes

Dear editor,

I’m supporting leading eye research charity Fight for Sight to raise awareness of the need for everyone to take regular eye tests – even if you think you can see well.

I personally know how important it is to look after your sight. I suffered with a ruptured cyst, which unfortunately deteriorated to the point now where I have very poor sight.

I would urge everyone to have their eyes tested at least every two years as this will pick up on the early signs of eye conditions like this – as well as glaucoma or macular degeneration – so that people can get treatment where available as early as possible.

Fight for Sight’s research shows that three in ten people don’t get their eyes tested at the recommended frequency of every two years, and that the most common reason is that people think that they can see fine. I hope my letter will encourage people to think again about looking after their eyes during National Eye Health Week. June Brown Eastenders actress
