... AND FINALLY
While I’m unashamedly wallowing in nostalgia, let me share a story told to me in an email from Leo Riley.
Leo came across his parents’ old rent book issued as they were one of the first people to be allocated a house in the new garden suburb of Wythenshawe.
On October 27, 1933 they got a letter from the council saying they could have the house within three days.
There were no numbers on the road but they were given the reference Block 155L: HC.
They moved into what was to become 557 Altrincham Road and the first payment was taken on October 30, 1933.
The rent was 7s/3d plus 3s/9d for rates and water charges and another 9d for electricity, making a grand total of 11s /9d.
I reckon that’s about 57p in today’s money. Leo wonders if you can beat that tale.
