No finer place for sure, Downtown

PETULA Clark sang it just across the road at The Lowry last year.

Now a developer is to build ‘Downtown’ in Ordsall, Salford.

The tower block bearing the name of the classic evergreen pop song, which was a worldwide hit in 1964, will be 15 storeys with 383 flats.

Altrincham-based Villafont Homes are behind the ‘Manhattaninspired’ multi-million pound scheme which has been submitted to Salford council for planning approval. It would be built on a 1.7 acre site on Woden Street next to the River Irwell and be the developer’s first Private Rented Sector scheme.

Villafont have submitted plans for one, two and three-bedroom flats. There would also be an on-site gym, spa, and media room.

They say that none of the apartments will be offered to buy-to-let investors, instead offering long-term rentals to first-time-buyers shut out of the housing market.

If the plans are passed, construction is expected to start next year. The scheme includes plans for a 24-hour concierge as well. as dry and cold storage rooms for potential supermarket deliveries around the clock.
