ASALFORD Royal nurse has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award for helping a woman cope with the death of her twin sister.
Melanie McDougall, bereavement liaison specialist nurse lead, has been named as a finalist in the Nursing Standard Awards 2015.
She was nominated for the exceptional support given to the family during their bereavement.
She is up against three others in the Patient’s Choice category, and public voting will close on April 29.
Tracy Mattison’s twin sister passed away in November 2013 and she nominated Melanie for the warm, inspiring and professional way she helped her through that difficult time.
In the nomination submission, Tracy said: “I can never thank Melanie enough for what she has done for me; she was the difference between me drowning in grief or finding the strength to go on.
“Melanie is too humble to accept thanks and so I think that nominating her for this award will be a fitting way for me to express my gratitude for the difference she has made to my life.”
As a keepsake, Melanie arranged for Tracy to have a photo taken holding her sister’s hand and also encouraged her to create a memory book with her son.
Melanie, who joined the bereavement service two years ago, said she was humbled to have been nominated but insists: “I was just doing my job.”
She added: “I am delighted but genuinely feel I did what I should be doing.
“For Tracy to share what a difference I may have made to her journey is a massive undertaking on her behalf.
“Being a twin, Tracy has always been one of two. To walk alongside her in her grief has been a privilege; I know I gave her time and space to just be herself and she trusted me. Really she deserves this for what she has been through.”
