Follows the nose at first, earthy and warm. Then the fruits arrive. Apricot jam and Danish pastries, those green chocolate lime humbugs. Finally, vanilla with a hint of smoke. Long and warming with those spices tingling the tongue. A solid, dependable whisky with all in balance. Nose: Cinder toffee pieces, chocolate coated caramel pennies, fresh sliced apple and honey. Black forest gateaux. A mahogany grand piano, polished notes of beeswax and lacquer. Gentle, runny honey but not clingy sweetness. That Black Forest gateaux is back. Orange sherbet takes the finish right to the end. Plenty of maple syrup. A great dram, that long lovely finish is intense, tannin laden and just wonderful really. Island Speyside ===== ===== Palate: Worldwide Worldwide Palate: Finish: Finish: Comments: 8.1 8.8 Comments: Lyndsey Lyndsey Nose: Strathdon Blue on toast with oak smoked ham, prawn cocktail crisps and sour cream. Give it a bit of time for notes of lemon, barbequed watermelon and vanilla custard to develop. The tastebuds are having a shock of sour! Last night’s tea leaves, cider vinegar, dehydrated orange peel and grapefruit zest with flashes of lime filled charcoal smoke. Long finish with a sour and bitter chalkiness. A full on fruity barbeque. Nose: Marzipan, rum 'n' raisin fudge and banana pancakes with wisps of peach yoghurt and dried apricots. Stewed rhubarb, strawberri­es, cinnamon and ice cream Chewits. Strawberri­es, ripe banana skin and baked red apples drizzled with almond milk and shavings of white chocolate. Toasted pistachios, marzipan and butter icing. Light and airy with a buttery consistenc­y. Lovely length. A fully loaded fruit basket. Sweetness comes in the form of caramel wafers and tablet. There are fruits starting to come through at first, but not fresh, more candied and gently cooked, lime marmalade. Now more malty. Takes its time, with hints of coffee grinds, ground spiced almonds and malt extract. Reminds me of sharing tins of travel sweets while walking in the woods. Nose: Seriously hefty malt and wood notes hit first here, from fresh sawn oak to seasoned logs in an outhouse. Lots of stewed fruit notes follow with apples and plums leading the way. Then manuka honey from the jar. More fruit here, moves more tropical with passionfui­t, griddled pineapple and peaches. Toffee pennies too in chocolate. Long and lush with the fruit and oak interchang­ing all the way. A seriously lush whisky. Speyside Highlands ===== ===== Palate: Specialist, Worldwide Worldwide Palate: Finish: Comments: Finish: 8.6 9.0 Comments: Christophe­r Lyndsey Nose: Grassy and fresh. A little shy on the nose. Cloudy apple juice, fresh-cut pear and vanilla. Fresh blueberry and a little spearmint. Cucumber and melon water. Incredibly light on the palate, it’s almost wine-like in its mouthfeel. There’s the apple juice sweetness again, with a little cinnamon and custard. It’s all quite dialled down and gentle. Short and very sweet. I can see a real market for this among those new to neat spirits. Nose: Hobnob biscuits drizzled with rich salted caramel, coconut fudge, orange marmalade and kids’ strawberry toothpaste followed by undertones of barbequed bananas. Stewed stone fruits in syrup, sour plums, almond croissants and blueberrie­s. Waves of floral notes with lavender-infused butter cream. An interestin­g finish with complex layers of light juiciness and oily textures. Light and rich at the same time. A taste sensation.
