Can YOU spot this not-so-famous grouse?

-

IT looks like a pile of rocks surrounded by the heather on a Scottish hillside.

But this is an optical illusion that proves the grouse is really one of nature’s masters of disguise.

With the Glorious Twelfth – the start of the grouse shooting season – just a month away, this bird proves why they are so difficult to track down, blending so well into the background that it is almost impossible to see.

Tourist laurence Debailleul, from Belgium, captured the puzzling picture while climbing Ben Wyvis, a Munro in ross-shire. Miss Debailleul, 51, said: ‘I first heard the noise of the birds but struggled to spot them – then I saw four of them blending into the background.

‘I took some pictures in the hope I might capture one of them. as I looked through my photos from the day I thought I’d missed them but just as I was about to hit delete I spotted it. I was so surprised to see how well the bird was camouflaged.’
