New 3D X-ray used to detect breast cancer
a 3D form of X-ray is better at detecting breast cancer than traditional mammography, according to the first large-scale study to compare the two methods.
The new technique is also more comfortable because it doesn’t compress the breast as much, which can deter some women from having mammograms. The technology, known as tomosynthesis, involves taking X-ray images of the breast from different angles. These are then combined in one 3D image.
In a study of 7,500 women aged 40 to 74, scientists at Lund University in sweden found the new screening method detected 40 per cent more breast cancers than mammograms.
researchers said reducing the discomfort could lead to more women participating in screening programmes. The new technique also involves lower doses of radiation.
