Mighty Matthew is in the mood

-

SCOTLAND’S Catriona Matthew played one of the best rounds of her life to move into contention for the Ricoh Women’s British Open yesterday. The 46-year-old from North Berwick fired an impeccable seven-under-par 65 at Woburn to lie just two strokes off the pace going into today’s third round. The mother of two young daughters hit every green in regulation, had notched four birdies by the seventh hole and picked up another three strokes coming home, at the 11th, 12th and 14th. Matthew, at nine under par, is two strokes behind leader Mirim Lee, the South Korean who added a 71 to her record-equalling first-round 62. The Scot, who will represent Team GB at the Rio Olympics next month alongside England’s Charley Hull, said: ‘It was one of the best rounds for a while. To give myself a chance on Sunday would be great.’ Matthew, who won the British Open in 2009, cannot contain her delight at going to Rio as golf returns to the Olympics for the first time since 1900. She said: ‘Growing up, I never thought I would be at the Olympics and this is probably about the only chance I am going to get in my career.’
