Saint who blessed my saving grace

- Gordon Charles Nicholson, Sutton Coldfield, W. Mids.

WHEN I was nine years old, in 1943, I saw a lovely St Christopher necklace in a shop window. It cost sixpence. I loved it so much, I asked the shopkeeper if I could pay one penny a week for six weeks. He was a kindly old gentleman and FURTHER to the letter about putting an egg in a leaky car radiator, my first car was a 25-year-old 1935 Austin 12 that had the same problem. I was taught to drive by a 60-year-old motor mechanic who also told me to put an egg in the radiator — and it worked like a charm. He added that a tin of Colman’s mustard poured into the smiled at me and agreed that I could. On the fifth week, I paid my penny and he handed me my necklace, saying that as I had never missed a week he would reduce the price for me. I still have the necklace in the same condition I bought it. I think I got a very good deal.

Jean Mortlock, Hornchurch, Essex. radiator while the engine was hot also had the desired effect. I tried it and it did work until a proper repair could be made. So Mrs Marner should show this letter to those people who don’t believe her. I am now 83 and drive a 16-year-old Rover 45 (which doesn’t have a leaky radiator).
