It is dramatically scented, bone dry and marvellously luxurious, and one of the best ‘fish’ wines on the planet. This is what the super-rich drink on their holidays and you can enjoy it, too, for £15. It’s a steal. 2015 Bellingham, The Bernard Series Roussanne, Paarl, South Africa £10, Sainsbury’s A SMALL part of this wine is matured in oak to add a core of silkiness and richness, which props up the greengage and honey flavours. This makes it one of the best wines for grand fish dishes and even your Christmas turkey feast — if you don’t go too heavy on the chipolatas! 2015 Yalumba, Y Series Viognier, South Australia £9.99, reduced to £7.99 each in a ‘mix six’ deal, until Jan 9, Majestic; £9, Morrisons A GROUND-BREAKING wine that features in my 100 Best Australian Wines Report and while it is a crazy bargain price, it lacks nothing in its amazing aromatics or its silky, sultry palate. Drink with spicy or creamy dishes. 2016 Taste the Difference Awatere Valley Riesling, Marlborough, New Zealand £8, Sainsbury’s UNLIKE most New Zealand rieslings, this has a little lick of sugar on the finish. This copies the delicious Blue Nun and Black Tower wines of old, but modernises the style by being a little juicy rather than medium sweet. It is amazingly retro and a perfect guilty pleasure.
