‘He’s shackling Press like a dictator’
A SENIOR Republican senator leapt to the defence of the media after the latest attack by Donald Trump, warning that suppressing the free press was ‘how dictators get started’.
Arizona’s John McCain was responding to a tweet in which the President said the media were ‘the enemy of the American people’. Speaking to NBC’s Chuck Todd from a conference in Munich, Mr McCain said: ‘I hate the press – you especially. But the fact is we need you, we need a free press. It’s vital.
‘If you want to preserve democracy, you have to have a free and many times adversarial press. Without it we would lose individual liberties over time. That’s how dictators get started.’
