Gosden is not up to Speed

- MARCUS TOWNEND

ROYAL ASCOT week started in disappointment for Frankie Dettori and John Gosden as favourite Shutter Speed lost her unbeaten record when fourth to Senga in the French Oaks at Chantilly. The Prix de Diane also continued to elude Aidan O’Brien, with Ryan Moore pulling up the trainer’s English 1,000 Guineas and Oaks runner-up Rhododendron at halfway after she reportedly broke a blood vessel. Shutter Speed had a difficult wide draw. She hit second place but faded and lost two places as she was beaten a length and a half. Gosden said: ‘She has run really well and coped well with her wide draw. There are no excuses. At one point, she looked like she was coming to win. Ten furlongs is the perfect distance for her but we could have done without the extra 100 metres.’ Stephane Pasquier-ridden Senga was a second win in the race for trainer Pascal Bary. Senga, beaten favourite when unplaced in the French 1,000 Guineas, stayed out of trouble in a typically rough Chantilly Classic. Runner-up Sistercharlie looked unlucky and Christophe Soumillon-ridden Onthemoonagain fell a furlong and a half out.

UNFORGETABLE FILLY, trained by Hugo Palmer and ridden by James Doyle, won yesterday’s German 1,000 Guineas in Dusseldorf.
