PRETTY it’s not. But for adventurous families who prefer glamping to camping, this chunky, new creation from Mercedes-Benz (pictured) will be a winner.

The German luxury car-maker’s bold mobile home on wheels has been created from its new X-Class utility vehicle — arguably the poshest pick-up truck on the planet — which went on sale here this month from £27,300.

now, to showcase the versatility of the upmarket ‘flat-bed’ vehicle, a clip-on caravan kit, costing around £30,000, has been devised by specialist campervan converter Tischer.

The living quarters fit like a snail’s shell over the 4x4’s rear cargo bay and driver’s cabin. They contain a 1.5m-wide double bed, big enough to sleep four adults, a three-burner gas stove, wash basin, three cosy seats that can be converted into a second bed, plus a shower and WC.

It’s on display from today at the Caravan, Motor, Touristik (CMT) show in Mercedes’s home city of Stuttgart in southwestern Germany.

The German car-maker is also showcasing another conversion option for its flexible X-Class — a kitchen on wheels.

The pull-out mobile kitchen, which costs up to £3,000, has been created by specialist Vanessa. Protected by a teak-wood cover, the unit glides from the rear cargo bed on a set of rollers.

The inside features include a cleverly packaged gas hob, coolbox and storage cupboards for pots, pans and cooking utensils.

Time to hit the road . . .
