THE HISTORY OF THIRD LANARK

-

THE club was created from the 3rd Regiment of the Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers in 1872. The soldiers were inspired to form a team after watching Scotland and England contest the first international football match at Hamilton Crescent in 1872. They became one of the original members of the SFA and won the Scottish Cup twice, in 1889 and 1905. The 1889 final became known as the ‘snow final’ but the weather proved no obstacle in a 3-0 defeat of Celtic. Third Lanark won their only top-flight league title in 1904. In 1961, they scored 100 goals in just 34 league matches but they also conceded 80, finishing third in the table. The club was dissolved in 1967 but was reborn in 1996 and still plays in Glasgow’s amateur leagues.
