Popular – but controversial

A GROWING number of dog and cat owners are turning to acupuncture, homeopathy, reiki and other alternative therapies for their pets.

Many vets offer acupuncture although, as in humans, there is controversy over whether it works. It is said to relieve pain by stimulating blood circulation. But many scientists are sceptical and say any benefits are probably due to a placebo effect being transferred to the worried pet owner.

However, Sue Thomas says of Alfie: ‘His quality of life is so much better now, I’d highly recommend acupuncture.’
