HERBERT HOOVER (1874-1964). The 31st U.S. president became a scapegoat for the Great Depression. However, he was regarded by many as a humanitari­an, helping save millions from starvation after World War I by heading an American relief operation in Europe and Russia. Hoover, who was orphaned aged nine and made his fortune in mining, said: ‘If a man has not made a $1 million by the time he is 40, he is not worth much.’ KATE O’MARA (19392014). The Leicester-born actress (right) was best known for playing Caress Morell, sister to Joan Collins’s Alexis Colby, in U.S. soap Dynasty. She admitted being irked after appearing on Graham Norton’s chat show: ‘He was being crude and I’m not very good with crude. I like sophistica­tion and elegance.’
