Chaos as angry Celtic fans target players and police

CELTIC l ast ni ght l aunched an i nvestigati­on after angry fans fired missiles at shaken players and clashed with police in disgracefu­l scenes outside Parkhead.

Supporters descended on the stadium to demand the sacking of boss Neil Lennon, who is fighting for his job after yesterday’s shock 2-0 defeat to Ross County in the Betfred Cup.

In a shameful turn of events that could yet damage the SPFL’s bid to have fans return to games, a mob of around 200 supporters ignored coronaviru­s restrictio­ns by gathering at the main stand.

POLICE were forced to barricade the entrance to Celtic Park last night after hundreds of angry fans gathered in a ‘shameful’ protest following the club’s latest defeat.

Two uniformed officers were injured when around 200 of the protesters lined a metal fence to demand the resignatio­n of manager Neil Lennon after his side lost 2-0 to Ross County in the last 16 of the Scottish League Cup.

Rows of officers in stab vests, around 30 police vans and a helicopter were dispatched to stop f ans reaching the entrance to the stadium.

Justice minister Humza Yousaf tweeted: ‘Officers have been front and centre keeping us safe during this pandemic, to treat them this way at any time is shameful, to do it during these times is a disgrace.’

No arrests were made at the protest.
