WHAT A DAME...

Scottish Field - - YOUR LETTERS -

Being a fellow Aberdonian I was quite surprised when reading your recent issue [Beating the Drum, April 2017] that I hadn’t heard of Dame Evelyn Glennie. What an inspirational woman!

It’s nice to see that nothing really held her back from pursuing her dreams. Going profoundly deaf at the age of 12 must have been difficult but it clearly didn’t hinder her pursuit of becoming the world’s first solo percussionist.

I would have liked to have found out a bit more about what exactly she felt at the time of going deaf but it is also nice that this doesn’t seem to be her defining feature but instead her music, which is clearly a true passion of hers and that is what she is recognised for. I’ll definitely go have a listen now to her work. Marie McDuff, Aberdeen
