CHEF’SCHOICE

Scottish Field - - RESTAURANT REVIEW -

Paul Leonard, Head Chef at The Isle of Eriska in Argyll, chooses his six favourite restaurants.

THE TAYNUILT ETIVE RESTAURANT WITH ROOMS, TAYNUILT

When I’ve got a night off this is where I go. You’re always get great wine and lovely locally produced food. The restaurant is quite new, but it gets better each time we go. www.taynuilthotel.co.uk, 01866 822437

BARLEY BREE, MUTHILL, CRIEFF

We lived in Crieff when I worked with Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles. I had Sundays off so we would go here. It was always a belting Sunday lunch. A great local restaurant run by Alison and Fabrice Bouteloupe. barleybree.com, 01764 681451

NORN, EDINBURGH

There’s a lot of Nordic style here and it’s very inventive. It is one to watch. It’s only been open around a year but every-thing about the meal we had was good. In Leith you have the big boys in Martin Wishart and Tom Kitchin and for me Norn is going to be one of them. nornrestaurant.com, 0131 629 2525

THE GANNET, GLASGOW

When we’re in Glasgow we always go here. On Sundays they do an amazing deal which is three courses and a glass of fizz for £30. The food is inventive. It’s really flying at the moment, which is good to see. www.thegannetgla.com, 0141 204 2081

THE HOEBRIDGE INN, GATTONSIDE

This Borders inn has recently been refurbished and the food is pretty simple. Last time I was there I had a really good monkfish masala. You know what you’re getting and that’s good food that can be enjoyed with the family. www.thehoebridge.com, 01896 823082

DELIVINO, CRIEFF AND AUCHTERARDER

A little Italian deli with wood-fired pizzas, sharing charcuterie boards and a great wine list. It’s all home cooked, nice food and perfect for a spot of lunch. When we lived in Crieff this was always where I would go for lunch or just a great coffee. www.delivino.co.uk, 01764 655655 (Crieff) or 01764 660033 (Auchterarder)
