Winton Cottage, East Lothian Reviewed by the Bootland family from Midlothian
It’s a cottage, but not as we know it. Winton Cottage sleeps 10 -12 and with a large kitchen, dining room, living room and games room there’s plenty of space for the extended family to enjoy a relaxing break. The cottage was cosy at all times, with plenty of bathrooms to go round. The bedrooms are named after local estates and are large and luxurious with comfy beds.
We spent a lovely peaceful weekend here with three generations of our family and our four-legged friends, wandering around the estate, playing pool in the games room and sipping G&Ts by the fire when the children were tucked up in bed. The cottage is beautifully decorated, traditional and in-keeping with a former laird’s house. The large enclosed garden provides the perfect place for children and dogs to run off some steam and there’s even a summer house to explore. The kitchen is well equipped with a suitably large cooker to feed an army of hungry guests. We even managed to bake a cake during our stay.
Winton estate surrounds the magnificent Winton Castle, the family home of Sir Francis and Lady Ogilvy. The Scottish Renaissance style castle is available for exclusive use and is a popular venue for weddings and business events. The estate can arrange activities for guests including clay pigeon shooting, falconry, Highland games, whisky tastings and more.
Winton Estate lies only half an hour’s drive from Edinburgh and close to local amenities in Tranent and Haddington. It is also conveniently located for exploring the East Lothian’s golf courses and coastline with it’s many beaches which are a haven for dog walkers and surfers who are willing to brave the chill of the north sea.
This grand property made for the perfect family getaway, but is versatile enough to work corporate hospitality and a variety of other uses. Prices from £1,395 for a short break
