The March Fallen – Volker Kutscher

One of the best crime books I’ve read in recent years. Set in Berlin in the run-up to the Nazis gaining power, it features Gereon Rath, a detective working in a world which sees the breakdown of society and the corruption of all legal structures. A brilliant read. And now that Babylon Berlin has hit the screens you can enjoy the visual realisation of that world too. This is an author I’d love to have at a future Bloody Scotland.

November Road – Lou Berney

Set in New Orleans, which I visited a couple of years ago representing Bloody Scotland at the Bouchercon Crime Festival, this is a new American classic. Both a love story and an action thriller, Guidry starts off as a loyal street lieutenant to a New Orleans crime boss until the President of the United States is assassinated, after which Guidry becomes the hunted rather than the hunter.

Going Rogue – Neil Lancaster

One of our Spotlighters at Bloody Scotland with Going Dark, Neil returns with another high octane thriller starring Tom Novak. I loved his first book and the second in the series is even better. Neil knows his stuff having served in law enforcement both in the military and the Met Police for over thirty years, so Novak’s adventures have all the thrill of fiction and fact combined.

Lin Anderson is the author of Time for the Dead, the 14th book in the series starring forensic scientist Dr Rhona MacLeod.
