I WANT IT BECAUSE: This classic softshell technical jacket is so warm that it can be worn with just one layer, even in a Scottish winter.
USEFUL FOR: Walking, working, camping – anything outdoorsy.
HIGH POINT: It’s windproof, fast drying, breathable, wicks sweat, dries fast and retains body warmth even when wet. I like the wire-rimmed hood and deep handwarmer pockets.
LOW POINT: Sleeves are too tight and zip a tad fiddly (my pet peeve).

I WANT IT BECAUSE: Briggs & Riley rightfully have a reputation for quality and have legions of devoted followers.
USEFUL FOR: Its scratch-resistant polycarbonate shell is light (4.5kg) but virtually indestructible and has a lifetime guarantee. It is also lockable.
HIGH POINT: Has a hanger and four internal compartments. At 112 cubic litres it’s huge (the expandable version is even bigger). LOW POINT: It’s pretty pricey, but then if you’re never going to need to replace it...
