A stunning 27lb 8oz shore-caught cod fell to Minehead angler George Stavrakopoulos on January 11 during the ebb tide in the town’s harbour.
By baiting with whole squid, George, 31, has already accounted for several double-figure cod this year from the shore and boat. This fish took a lug and rag cocktail tipped off with three squid on an up-and-over rig with size 3/0 Varivas hooks.
“I did attempt to return the fish, but it would not go and kept floating, so I ended up keeping it,” said George, below, who usually returns big fish.
George’s friend Craig Butler said: “It's been an exceptional year for Bristol Channel cod, with the Minehead area just fantastic, and only yesterday morning I had one 9lb 11oz. Big squid and lug baits are the key to cod this year.”
