During last year’s mackerel season at the South Gare, in Redcar, my 12-year-old autistic son was shocked how some anglers let their children kill the fish.
He saw them throwing the fish at the seawall, on the floor and punching them. I taught my son how to kill a fish humanely and quickly, which is how I was taught, by an old fisherman when I was a kid. The method is to put my fingers under its gills and snap its head back. However, I'm not entirely sure if this is the correct way, but it is quick for the fish.
