Let’s go fishing
You might have thought things had gone quiet on the subject of bass protection measures, such as those implemented for 2016. Well, I can tell you that various bodies are having their say behind the scenes in preparation for decisions later this year.
For instance, proposals have been put forward by one organisation to ban the landing of bass by both commercial and recreational anglers in 2017, although another body is suggesting a monthly bag limit and a tagging scheme.
It is the International Council for the Exploitation of the Seas that is suggesting a zero catch in 2017 due to declining stocks of bass. You can find out more by turning to the Your Fishing section starting on page 102.
A second group, based in Ireland, the North Western Waters Advisory Council, says recreational anglers want a monthly catch limit instead of the present daily bag limit. Another of the ideas in its briefing paper is a control and monitoring system based on tags, and a telephone/web-based logbook approach for catch recording.
For those looking to get out and catch some bass, check out Henry Gilbey’s piece on lure rods on page 26, and Mike Ladle’s views on catching big fish on page 30.
Meanwhile, the tope season is well underway, and you can try a rig suggested by Dave Barham on page 36, and also find out about the sport in Scotland’s Luce Bay when Dave Lewis visited top small-boat skipper Ian Burrett (see page 54).
As usual, we’ve got a packed issue with plenty of fishing from the shore and afloat; that includes popular, growing sectors like LRF and kayak angling too.
There’s plenty of information about tackle, with new products featured including my colleague Paul Fenech testing the Leeda Icon MPR rod, and Henry Gilbey’s view on the value-for-money Daiwa J-Braid. Those looking for a great tackle bargain should check out our reader offer on page 98.
If you’re in the market for a reel, take a look at our subscription offer on page 52, where you can get a multiplier or fixed-spool when you sign up.
Finally, check out the latest catch pictures from readers in the Your Fishing section, starting on page 102, and I’d recommend you read the story about how one reader caught a 66lb ling (page 106). Enjoy the magazine.
