WELCOME TO ISSUE 535...
The arrival of the long-awaited glorious summer weather kicked off some spectacular sport for anglers in Britain and Ireland.
You have been catching species ranging from bass to smoothhounds, but perhaps the highlight has been a recordbreaking trio of sharks.
Caught by boat anglers during a single week at the end of July, it proves big shark sport just keeps getting better. The first huge predator was a sixgilled shark, estimated to weigh in excess of 1,300lb and thought to be the biggest fish landed by an angler in the British Isles. It fell to Tony Carrig, while fishing out of Carrigaholt, County Clare, Ireland.
Next up was Nick Lane, who boated a record-beating thresher, estimated to weigh 368lb, out of Ilfracombe, North Devon. Third of giant predators was Danny Fitch’s male blue shark estimated to weigh 242lb, taken out of Milford Haven. It smashed the current Welsh record of 222lb. Shore anglers have been reaping the rewards, too, with a porbeagle shark estimated to weigh around 200lb caught from a West Wales rock mark. The catch was a combined effort between Mark Turner and Simon Shaw. Turn to page 118 for the full story. It’s not all about sharks though. In this bumper 140page issue we’re giving you a free pullout on lure fishing – an area of our sport that is becoming increasingly popular with anglers fishing from the shore and afloat.
While lure fishing has been around for many decades, the growth in specialist tackle and ever-growing variety of lures has created a real buzz among sea anglers. Find out what it’s all about by turning to page 57.
Of course, there is our usual popular mixture of shore and boat fishing coverage, along with insights into the latest tackle, as well as 10 pages of pictures of readers’ catches, starting on page 118.
