Are there any tips or techniques you can give me for getting through surf?

GR says: Surf launchings and landings can be painful, so it pays to practice them with an empty kayak so you don’t put your gear at risk while getting used to them.

The most important thing to do is to keep the nose of the kayak perpendicular to the wave. Any hint of moving into a parallel position will see the next wave whip the stern around, and you will be rolling along the foreshore with your kayak and gear.

Keep the kayak straight, pick your spot and paddle with fury! Waves can be braced with a paddle, which is a handy trick to learn on the way in. Always remember one thing – that if you ever get knocked off your kayak, never let it get between you and the waves because a wave will pick it up and hurl it into you with enough force to break ribs.
