TACKLE

For the blues, a 20lb-class rod and reel loaded with 20lb mono is perfect. Have a 30lb outfit handy should a porgie come cruising. What I would do with the 20 is fish a slightly heavier 250lb all wire, 15ft trace with an 8/0 hook. These will give you the edge if you do hook a porbeagle.

For inshore ground fishing, a 20lb-class rod with a reel loaded with 30lb braid will cover most standard situations. Use 20lb braid and a 12/20lb-class rod for both lure and drift fishing.

Lures such as Savage eels, Sidewinders and Devil’s Own Shads all worked well. Best colours are clear, black, red and white. Tackle losses were minimal, but take lead weights between 4-12oz, except for the deeper water offshore.
