Q: Are there ways of keeping salt out of reels on a kayak?

GR says: Not really! I use the ‘rocket launcher’ style of rod holder sometimes. They keep the rods a bit higher and a little bit more out of the way of the water.

The reality of kayak fishing is that your gear gets wet and if left that way the salt

will start to corrode the reel.

You have two options: buy cheap gear and hope to get a year out of it or buy quality and look after it. Each option has its advantages, but I’d never forgive myself for losing a good fish on poor gear.

Wash your gear in freshwater as soon as you get home after each trip. Don’t leave it in the car boot or the shed until the next morning. You will forget and then your reel will seize up. The same applies to anything metallic and exposed to saltwater.
