To qualify for the championship, competitors must have won a first or second award in open stakes or a first award in an open breed stake since August 9, 2014. The winner and runner-up in the 2014 and 2015 champion stakes and the winner of the 2016 Kennel Club Puppy Derby Stake are also entitled to run, as is the 2015 winner of the Irish Championship for pointers and setters. This year, 47 dogs qualified for the top event, which included 10 late qualifiers, comprising five English setters, three pointers and two Irish setters. Two Irishmen – Gerry Devine and Allan Neill – created history this year by being the first handlers to pilot eight dogs each in the championship.
