Welsh working gundog certificate day
THE GUNDOG Club of North Wales held a working gundog certificate day on dummies at Overton-on-dee. The assessors for the day were Terry and Gaynor Bailey. It was interesting to see two curly coated retrievers and a weimaraner joining four labradors.
The dogs were first tested on a drive with retrieves ahead and blinds behind. The next test was a retrieve requiring the dogs to jump over a fallen tree on their way to the dummy. Then there was a retrieve from the River Dee, watched by an angler 50 yards downstream who caught a trout while the dogs swam out for their dummies.
The final test required the dogs and handlers to form a large circle, with shots fired and dummies thrown into the middle. Handlers were then instructed, one at a time, to leave their dogs at stay and walk forward into the circle and retrieve a dummy themselves.
Five dogs passed and received their certificates, and two were assessed as not ready. The assessors’ favourite on the day was a curly coated retriever bitch, Springcurl Purplerain, who collected a bag of Skinner’s dog food. This bitch did not put a foot wrong all morning and was a pleasure to watch.
Certificates were awarded to Ray Roberts with lab.b. Sula On The Wing of Tyddynbrooks; Karen Bugess with lab.b. Ostrowski Bravo; Sue Margerison with curly coated. b. Springcurl Purplerain; Steve Davies with curly coated. b. Springcurl Cameron’s Diaz at Kandrelli & Maureen D’arcy with lab.d. Lancastria Jack.
