Best of the basics for retrievers in Wiltshire
Club: United retriever Club Hants & South West Area Event: Puppy/special puppy, novice dog/novice handler and junior working test Venue: Cleeves Farm, Chilmark
Judges: Sarah Miles, Jill Gardner, Annie buckley and Julie Kelvie
Organisers: Sarah Winter, Jackie Davis, Nick Coates and Jane Manley
A variety of four tests were set which challenged the 44 dogs on their basics. Julie Kelvie enjoyed judging a test which included heel work and a memory retrieve with shot. She highlighted the importance of heel work. “Some of the dogs and handlers failed on the heel work today. It’s essential to get the foundations right before moving on.” Annie Buckley assessed a test which included a double marked retrieve to shot, one being in long grass and the other on a sloping bank. She said: “I’ve seen some great dogs today and some fantastic retrieves. However, the groundwork needs to be in place so they can get it right. The tests were seemingly simple but they challenged the dogs on their basics.”
A two-dog run-off was necessary to decide second and third place for the junior handlers and puppy category. Many thanks to our hosts for allowing the club to use the ground and to the judges, helpers and competitors for making the day a success.
