The winner of Letter of the Week will receive a Jack Pyke Countryman Fleece Gilet. Made from 300g thermal fleece with nubuck piping, it is available in sizes S-XXXL. For more information visit www.jack have had deadly consequences. Just one bad apple? I think not.

The widespread removal — and prevention of return — of the larger raptor species from the Forest of Bowland, Yorkshire Dales, Dark Peak and so on requires systematic, ongoing efforts.

Does Mr Pilkington think this could be accomplished by the opponents of shooting, undetected, under the very noses of keepers and estate staff on such a scale?

The shooting press is fond of trotting out statements, imploring conservation groups to “work with us”. Perhaps that’s what the readership likes to see.

I suggest the first step should be widespread acceptance, on our part, of the problems we have created, and secondly be seen to be doing something about it.
