Recent research into the binary asteroid Patroclus and Menoetius points to a very early rearrangement of our Solar System. Most planetary scientists agree that the gas giants migrated to their current positions after forming in a different orbit, gravitationally upsetting the Solar System in the process. It’s not clear when this happened, but the survival of a fragile binary like PatroclusMenoetius suggests it happened within the first 100 million years of the Solar System.
