THIS is the poignant moment a pilot on the last- ever Emirates Boeing 777 flight from Birmingham to Dubai waved goodbye to the Midland airport.

The gesture was recorded by delighted plane- spotter Louis Cartwight- Walls as the service, flight EK40, prepared for its last take- off on Saturday.

He wrote: “Waving pilot on the lastever Emirates B777 at BHX. “This is an incredibly sad sight. “It will be greatly missed – at least we got a waving pilot though. “Thanks for all the memories!” Incredibly, the pilot later commented on the video on YouTube.

Rob Savory wrote: “Thanks for posting my last departure from BHX.

“I am sure we will be back occasionally.

“Going to miss it, but not the crosswinds.”

From October 29, the Boeing 777 currently flying the route has been replaced by the giant Airbus A380.

The superjumbo – 40 per cent longer than any other passenger plane – will now operate twice- daily between Birmingham Airport and Dubai.

Emirates said the introduction of the double daily A380 service was driven by huge demand from passengers in Birmingham to travel on the famous aircraft.

Laurie Berryman, Emirates UK vicepresident, said: “The launch of the second daily A380 service shows our continued commitment to this important route, allowing more passengers travelling from Birmingham to take advantage of our A380 to A380 connectivity via Dubai.

“Thanks to its strategic position in the Midlands, the route allows visitors and businesses to travel to Dubai and beyond from the heart of the UK.

“Now in its 17th year, we have seen a pronounced growth in the popularity of our Birmingham service.

“We are looking forward to a bright future with our twice daily A380 service.”

William Pearson, aviation director at Birmingham Airport, added: “We are delighted that Emirates has launched a second A380 service from Birmingham to Dubai with this iconic aircraft.

“Having this additional capacity on the lunchtime service to Dubai and onwards ensures flexibility and choice for passengers and it also shows the commitment that Emirates has in the Midlands region.”
