Prayers needed on Brexit mess
DEAL or no deal? Do you remember the TV programme where contestants could choose a winning box which might contain a fortune or nothing?
The tension was heightened when a banker made tempting offers for higher riches.
The outcome was uncertain until the last box was opened.
Brexit feels the same, tension, uncertainty.
We could have everything or nothing, tempting offers are made and the outcome is uncertain.
There is also a strong culture of name calling and criticism and everyone disagrees with each other.
Many with opposing views claim they can step in, resolve all the issues, bring order out of chaos and become the saviour of the situation. The future of our nation is being resolved by human endeavour with accusations, hostility and divisions.
We prefer to rely on our elected politicians rather than trust our reliable, stable and loving God who wants the best for us, our families and our nation.
The Bible is very clear that we should seek God’s wisdom and righteousness for our leaders and that we should pray for them to make sensible and wise decisions. Two verses tell us: 1. “Seek the prosperity of the city where I have sent you as exiles. Pray to the Lord on its behalf for if it prospers you too will prosper. ( Jeremiah 29: 7)
2. “I urge then that requests, prayers, intercessions and thanksgiving be made for everyone – for kings and all those in authority that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” ( 1 Timothy 2: 1- 2)
The situation with Brexit seems desperate and chaotic yet we choose to ignore the instructions given to us by God in the Bible. Maybe now is the time to cry out to our wise, loving God and ask Him to watch over us, restore harmony and be evident in the policies and decisions our leaders make on our behalf.
We can all pray for God’s intervention with Brexit, call to our Saviour Jesus Christ to redeem the mess we are in and ask the Holy Spirit to bring unity and harmony back to this country.
