The Voice duo say it was always going to be Team Tom
THEY wowed Sir Tom Jones with their version of an Elvis classic on TV’s The Voice at the weekend.
And that rendition of 1973 hit Burning Love meant it was an all-Welsh team-up for Sir Tom and his new proteges Dane Lloyd and Taylor Jones, who perform as Into the Ark.
Now, the South Wales duo have opened up about their coaching sessions with the Treforest-born superstar – and the whirlwind they’ve experienced since Saturday’s appearance on the hit musical talent show.
The number of the band’s Facebook fans shot up by 4,000 after that one performance alone.
“Our social media has gone mad,” Dane, 25, told us. “The best thing is the bands we have toured with, who we thought might have something to say about us going on the show, have been really behind us.”
On the show, Taylor and Dane appeared to wobble a little when choosing a coach, before finally deciding on fellow Welshman Sir Tom.
But Taylor, 20, explained there was never really that much doubt: “Before we went on we both had it in our minds to go with Tom.
“Then when we were deciding, there was so much pressure and Gavin [Rossdale] said some really nice things... but it was always going to be Tom.”
The show saw Sir Tom make a longawaited return to primetime television after the show made its switch from BBC to ITV.
And Saturday’s audience saw Sir Tom as well as new judges Gavin Rossdale and Jennifer Hudson, spin around in their chairs to show their appreciation for the Blackwood duo.
The pair revealed their acoustic performance had been honed during a stint working in North Africa.
“About two years ago we were moving to Tunisia and we needed to do a lot of soft, nice covers due to the space we were performing in,” said Dane.
“We did a lot of songs and changed them and Burning Love got loads of reaction, so we took a risk and went with it during the blind auditions.
“Tom just said it was a brave move to do it and liked that we didn’t try to be Elvis and that made us feel proud.”
Now the boys are through to the battle round where they will have a singoff with another of Sir Tom’s contestants.
“It’s been amazing working with Tom and we’ve been lucky enough to sit around the piano with him and have one-to-ones,” added Dane.
“It’s the battles next and that’s been a really nerve-racking experience because we’ve never had to do a singing battle with another singer before.”
The Voice UK continues on ITV on Saturday at 8pm
