Community rallies to help family who lost everything in house fire
THERE has been an astonishing community response since the Evans family lost all of their possessions in a serious house fire.
The family of six were lucky to escape with their lives after a blaze caused by a smouldering candle destroyed their home on Friday night.
Raymond and Rachel Evans managed to save their children Morgan, two, Eva-Mai, four, Carwyn, five, and Thomas, seven, after they were alerted by the smoke detector when everyone had gone to bed.
But they lost all of their possessions that were in their home at Caer Wetral, Kenfig Hill, near Bridgend, except for a handful of toys.
Rachel, 27, said she even had to borrow a bra as they fled in their night clothes.
However, since her aunt Dawn Pound posted an appeal on Facebook on Saturday, things have started to look up.
The Westward Community Centre in Cefn Glas, Bridgend, was opened up to receive donations and dozens of people turned up with everything from duvets to shoes and toys.
People have also been dropping things off to relatives’ houses.
And offers of donations of everything from cookers to sofas, tables and chairs and vans for moving came flooding in.
A JustGiving page has also raised £700.
Dawn said: response. “It’s been a fantastic
“When I put it up on Facebook I never in my wildest dreams thought I would have a response like this.”
She said there have been many amazing and unexpected gestures including Rachel’s ex-boss putting £250 in her hand.
Someone also knocked on Dawn’s sister’s front door and handed over new school uniforms for the children that they had been out and bought, and Lucy, a family friend, has bought all of the children new school shoes from Clarks.
“I just can’t get over the response we have had for them,” added Dawn. “It’s absolutely fantastic.”
She said Rachel, Raymond and the children are currently staying with relatives and hope to be rehomed by their housing association soon.
