Singer ‘implores’ people to use vote

-

SINGER Charlotte Church has shared a message appealing for people to use their vote in the General Election on June 8.

Sharing a message from the garden of her home in Cardiff, Church, 31, shared a message on Sunday appealing to voters who had not yet registered to make sure they did so before the deadline last night.

In the message, posted to her Facebook page, she spoke about the first time she voted, revealed which way she’d be voting for the 2017 General Election and implored people to use their vote.

“I understand that it’s another general election. Politics is unbelievably tiresome, especially around the time of an election,” she said.

“The first time I ever voted was two years ago,” she revealed. “Before that I’d never registered and never bothered to vote because I thought that they were all the same, they were all liars, it didn’t make much of a difference anyway, and it had nothing to do with me.

“The reason that changed is because I started to understand more about things like the education system and the NHS. Whether it’s your bin day or your local council, whatever it is – the government decisions affect everything to do with our lives. I would implore you to please register to vote and then vote in the election.”

The Cardiff-born singer has become more involved in politics in recent years, appearing at protests in the wake of the result of the 2015 General Election, protesting against the then Chancellor George Osborne’s Budget the same year, and being openly critical of US President Donald Trump.

She also spoke last year about how she would consider standing for Parliament in the future.

She had said: “Maybe when I am older – I have got two young kids now.

“Also, in terms of politics, I think it’s a calling and I think you should dedicate yourself to it.

“The world is full if careerist politicians and I’m not interested in any of that stuff.

“If I were to do it I would want to properly dedicate myself to it but I’m going to wait until my babies grow up.”
